Hi folks,
Happy new year hope you all had a restive festive and are looking forward to a busy summer in the hills. We’ve got a bit on.
First up. Open climb. February 13. The event is all go. Numbers appear to be down on previous years with approximately half the usual number of tickets sold at present, however we are still taking bookings and are planning for a full event. If you are helping on the day, please show up at club night to make sure you have a role assigned and know what you are doing.
Club night this month is a mixed bag of various business. DOC have sent through some information concerning their intentions on the Pouaki Circuit, which I’ll share with you all and send back any comments from the floor.
Greg Banks is going to run us through the project to replace the power cable to the Lodge, describe the works and freak us all out over the costs. Pete Lethbridge will stand nearby and look unimpressed but resigned to his fate. Take your dairies and pencil in the dates because, like all club projects, we’re going to need volunteers over the time the works are in progress.
Our septic tank will be pumped out after the open climb so vollies also required to lug pipe for that job too. Greg Sharman and Andrew Jordan are running that project this year and I reckon they want to hear from you more than ever. Their contact details are on the club web page.
By the time this missive makes it through your junk filter, the Club’s 2021 summer rock season should have commenced with the annual rock and rope day, check the facebook page for photos and feedback on that one. And for those who attended or those who just want to go cragging, there is another club crag trip in the pipeline, this time planned for Wharepapa sometime in March, please get in touch with trip co-coordinators Ange and Lindsay to register interest and force a definite date. Also, rock rats, a reminder that the NZAC Taranaki Climbing meet on the 26 – 27 February, based at Manganui Lodge.
The Club social calendar has less strenuous events, primarily involving calorific gain, planned for May, June and July at the Lodge.
Finally, at times the Lodge has been left in a bit of a state by overnight groups; kitchens left messy; benches not wiped down; gear left in the lounge during the day; and a half-arsed attitude towards following basic hut etiquette. Despite heading to the hills to avoid the shambles created by humanity, the likes of Gail, Phil, The Banks’, Sheryl and Elaine (among others) regularly find themselves cleaning and tidy our Lodge after others have trashed it. So, for their sakes, if not your own self-respect, please try and leave the Lodge in better condition than you found it.
Chur.
