HiTAC November 2022

President’s Desk

Kia ora folks,

Spring is well and truly here, and rather than the club leaving its members to hibernate we have plans to keep them training over the warmer months. This training consists of alpine and sport rock climbing, navigating alpine routes rarely visited and ticking along in the background preparations for the club’s annual open climb. Therefore I will keep this president’s desk to the point as you have a lot of trip reports and upcoming trips below to read through. First up, well done to the first time Taranaki maunga summiters and the experienced mentors who made the trip possible. We were lucky enough to have a fresh dump earlier in the week making perfect conditions for the first time summiteers, See trip report below for a full account from a participants perspective.

Big thanks to those who made it to our last clubnight for the Open Climb 2023 induction and the massive influx of those making the commitment to help out on the day, If you didn’t make it, it’s not too late to put your name forward to volunteer but don’t take to long as we need a full list of volunteers and backups by late November to ensure the event can go ahead so if you can help out in any capacity on the 11th of February 2023 please email the president.tac@outlook.com ASAP.

Our next two club nights will be social ones with a Quiz night in November and the club’s annual photo competition in December. See below for full details on how to enter your own snaps/ beautifully composed pieces of art.

We have received member feedback that it would be ideal to access the archive of previous club newsletters in one location. The committee has now responded with help from the clubs technical wizard Carey Clow the enormous two year backlog has now been made accessible to both members and the public through the news section on the website. On the topic of HiTAC’s if you know of a current member and they are not receiving the HiTAC please get them to email secretary.tac@outlook.com and we will get it sorted in due course.

Finally some of you may have seen on either Aotearoa Climbing Access Trust or our own facebook page that Pakeho, a great beginners/intermediate sport crag, day trippable from New Plymouth is Indefinitely closed to climbers for a multitude of reasons. This is not an isolated incident with a lot of north island crags have ongoing access issues. If there are any Taranaki Locals who want to volunteer their time in an effort to re-establish climbing access at Pakeho and potentially other close by crags, please complete the form below as we work with other groups to make this happen. Thanks to those who have already signed up and we will be in touch shortly.
