HiTAC June 2021

President’s Desk Kia ora folks, Not the best month on the Maunga, and our thoughts go out to the families of Richard Phillips and Peter Kirkwood who fell and died near the summit this month. Thanks, and much respect are due to the rescue team, who recovered the climbers in the difficult conditions. This time of year can be especially dangerous as the mountain transitions from summer to winter conditions, so please everyone be careful up there. It’s crampons, ice axes and the know how to use them at all times on the upper mountain at all times from now on. […]

HiTAC May 2021

President’s Desk Kia ora folks, Stuff got done this month! Pete Lethbridge and his merry band of electricians have installed the new power cable, flicked the switch, and got it all up and running again. The lodge is all powered up and whatever accounts for normal business up there has resumed. Because the works were taking place during the week, the retired were massively overrepresented in the vollie turn out, be it orchestrating logistics, shovelling dirt, feeding the workers, or messing about with dangerous bits of wire, so a huge thanks are due to the club’s boomers this time round. […]

HiTAC April 2021

President’s Desk Kia ora folks, First things first. A huge thanks to everyone who helped and is still helping run the 74th open climb. It’s a massive undertaking and requires ridiculously large contributions of time and resources from at least 70 club members every year. There’s always a sense of “bloody hell, why are we still doing this”, but hopefully the expressions of immense gratitude and accomplishment on the faces of those punters that had a once in lifetime experience they couldn’t have done without us, still makes this event relevant and worthwhile. Minor admin point. There are several first […]

If you are helping on the day, please show up at club night to make sure you have a role […]

HiTAC December 2020

President’s Desk Hi folks, It’s been a while, did y miss me? It’s still not December and I’m begging for January already, but here goes the last one of these before the pre-Christmas madness kicks in and renders me completely insensible. We managed to get a few club trips away over the past couple of months, including a breezy mission to Syme Hut, followed by a horrendous, but probably successful slush summit (I think that’s where we were) in white out conditions.  The ever-popular Labour weekend rock trip to Kawakawa Bay lived up to everyone’s high expectations despite a few […]
