HiTAC February 2022

President’s Desk Kia ora katoa, Happy new year everyone, and welcome to the brave new world that we’re about to set out into. One that begins without the open climb. Cancelled due to pandemic for the first time in its illustrious history. Special thanks to Jon Crane, Sophie Tucker, Carey Clow, Glen Hodges, and Conrad Murray for the time they dedicated to the OC committee this year. The OC safety plan got a major overhaul; the ticketing system replaced; registrations taken; roles assigned; volunteers contacted; threats, bribes, and indiscretions leveraged, all to get this up and running. However, this year […]

HiTAC December 2021

President’s Desk Kia ora katoa, Righto, last one of these for the year, and I’ll make it brief. Charlie is hovering over the keyboard to push send on this HiTac, so I’d better move fast. First up, the Open Climb. A joyous occasion of club togetherness, enshrined by over 80 years of beautiful tradition and public service, happens all over again next February the 12th 2022. The Open Climb committee is rolling out the event programme, starting with a quick induction movie, which will be shown at the December Club night. There’s going to be a few changes to the […]

HiTAC November 2021

President’s Desk Kia ora katoa, Another busy month. Avid readers will by now have noted this is a common preamble, TAC must be doing something right. It’s a barely coherent mixed bag from me this month, all but impossible to fashion into a sensible narrative, but first up, check out the trip reports section to find out what you missed out on this month. From being lost in a white-out somewhere near Syme Hut on the Fantham’s Peak trip or topping out on Taranaki for the annual slush summit (spoiler: as the summit skiers will attest, it wasn’t that slushy […]

HiTAC October 2021

President’s Desk Kia ora folks, Well that one flew by fast. First up congratulations to all the snow crafters who completed their SC1 and 2 courses this year. Hopefully you’re all now inspired for greater things and chaffing to get above the snow line while it lasts. Huge thanks to the volunteer club trainers and helpers who put in the time to run the courses and big pat on the back for the Club Captain for organising this for another year. For those that completed the courses, and any old heads who are interested, this year’s slush summit is on […]

HiTAC September 2021

President’s Desk Kia ora folks, Arggh, this again. While I’m not really known for my sunny, optimistic disposition for the sake of everyone’s sanity I’ll try and keep a positive spin on things. So, first of all, our club night this month is the NZ Mountain Film Festival, which will still be held at the 4th Wall Cinema on the 16th of September, assuming we are at Level 2 by that time. We don’t expect to be below Level 2 again anytime soon, so numbers will be limited to 100 people. If we aren’t at Level 2 on the 16th, […]
